Physical Description | Scion is slim, but still curvaceous enough to look like a woman. this was something she despised when she was in her early teens because it was safer to look like a boy.
Sometimes she can still pass for one--with a little help. Now, she is happier in her own skin, but she still tends to minimize her looks by wearing dark colors and simple clothes -- more out of a lifetime of needing to be unnoticed than anything else. She likes to wear blouses and vests whenever possible. She's starting to come out of her shell, but she is still shy around new people and still tends to be more of an observer. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | It's hard for Scion to trust people, but when she does, she is warm and friendly. But to strangers she seems aloof and introverted. She cares about people, sometimes far more than she should and so opens herself up to being hurt. She is very good at pretending otherwise, unless someone knows her well. She loves the woods and being outdoors where she feels the most at home. Sometimes, if she's not busy working she can get claustrophobic. Then she will often spend time on the holodeck or in the arboretum. |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | Intelligent, caring, empathetic, cautious, often finds unorthodox solutions to problems.
Good with computers, infiltration, gathering information and survival. Has street smarts. Knows how to survive on the streets and in the wild. Excellent with a knife. Picks up accents and languages quickly. Doesn't trust easily, introverted, doesn't always respect authority, has been known to bend the rules to get something done. Has a Robin Hood Complex. Has been known to go out of her way to help a child in need. |
|
Ambitions | Stability and security.
Finding someone to love who loves her back, but she doubts that anyone would care for her once they know about her past. So, she will settle for stability and security. |

Hobbies & Interests | Legerdemain, mostly up-close magic like card tricks, coin tricks, making things appear and disappear, picking pockets. Can escape from ropes and wrist bindings. Woodcarving, chess, games of skill. Games of chance (although she never bets what she can't afford to lose). Good at appraising the value of an item. Lock picking, computer hacking/programming. Mimicry. She can mimic an accent or mannerism with a little practice. Painting with oils, has a good eye for the value of a painting. Drawing with pencils or charcoal. She will often draw pictures of people, plants, trees, etc. She has become quite good over the years. Acrobatics (which helps with getting out of ropes and getting into places most people couldn't.) Languages: Standard, Carennian, Vulcan, Romulan, Orion, Bajoran, Betazoid. Reads a number of dead languages, including hieroglyphics. |
Personal History | Scion does not know where she was born or who her parents were. She has vague memories of a man and a woman who smiled a lot and called her "Scion," but she was very small when her parents died and she was left alone to fend for herself. (It is believed they were merchants, but there is no proof.) Two merchants, a male and a female, died a few days before she was found and put in an orphanage. The small ship, the Scheherazade, was destroyed in an accident. Officials tried to trace where it came from, but after finding that the ship had been to dozens of planets and owned by multiple people, they gave up. At first, she was put in foster homes, but she never quite fit in and always felt that the families didn't want her. After four homes in two years, she ran away. The officials over the foster system decided she was a problem child and didn't look for her. She was taken in by a gang of kids who lived on the streets of Serenity, the capital city of Carenna III. They taught her how to survive, how to pick pockets, how to steal and later, how to break into businesses to use their computers to get information. That led to learning how to hack and program. She found she had a knack for computers and their languages and became the person sent to break into a computer to get information on government policies, where it was safe to live, where and when a government raid was going to happen, and how to get fake accounts and credits to buy clothing for the growing number of children in her "family." She didn't know she was a telepath, but she picked up on the thoughts around her, which helped her get information and stay out of trouble. She learned to lean on people to influence them or distract them. One of the older boys taught her how to be a street magician and she would often get money from her "tricks." As she grew into her preteens she preferred this to stealing, although she kept up on her pickpocketing, but only to impress tourists. She used her telepathic abilities to help her legerdemain, and to help her get more money from passersby. Sometimes, she would lean on them a little so they would feel sorry for her and give her more money. Sometimes she would use her ability to make people forget they saw her or to get information. She continued to learn what she could about computers. She would often stay up late at night to hack into the main computer database to study, teaching herself math, history, and economics. She would also look through the computer to learn what she could about the planet and its government to help her survive. When she was fourteen, the government decided to join the Federation. They created a task force to round up all the street orphans and lock them away in work houses to better their chances of gaining admittance. Those who caused trouble and were known to be thieves were thrown in jail. The older boys were sent into the fields to do manual labor. Others were sent to work in factories or to wash dishes. At first Scion was put with the boys as she always wore baggy pants and over-sized shirts to hide her gender. Most girls her age ended up working the streets as prostitutes and the clothes allowed her to be a street magician and hacker. When she refused to shower with the other boys and tried to run away, the officials quickly discovered her secret and shuffled her off to be with the girls. Scion was put to work cleaning rooms at a hotel in Serenity, a job she hated, but it exposed her to people of other planets and to knowledge of other worlds. She would often spend her breaks devouring anything she could get her hands on to learn more. She was fascinated with the stories she read and heard about other planets and she yearned to get away from her situation and her planet. One day she was caught reading on a break and accused of stealing the PADD. Her avowals that she'd found it laying on a table were brushed off and she was sent to a holding facility to await "trial." Scion knew that there would be no arguing and no justice, so as soon as she had a chance, she picked the lock, went to the nearest spaceport and stowed away on the first ship available. She was caught three days later stealing food. She convinced the captain to let her work for her passage. Scion quickly learned how to help around the ship, doing odd jobs at first, then working with the computer and handling inventory. Scion listened to the passengers talk and, with the help of her telepathic ability, found it easy to pick up languages. With the Captain's approval, she began to study the languages, history and cultures of the different people of the Federation. Within a year, she could speak four languages like a native and had begun to study in the native language of that species. She also began to take university courses to help her in her learning. She still said nothing to the captain or any of the crew about being able to read people's thoughts. No one she'd ever met had that ability. But as her studies advanced from Terran to Vulcan to Romulan and then Bajoran, she began to realize that her parents were from a telepathic species. A visit to a doctor on one of their stopovers confirmed that she was Betazoid. The doctor was surprised that she was unaware of her lineage and gave her a PADD of texts to help her learn about her inherent traits and how to use them. At nineteen she had the equivalent knowledge of a degree in history, linguistics, and computer science. But it wasn't enough for Scion. She wanted to learn more. She left the ship and settled on Betazed so she could learn how to control her telepathic abilities. For two years she studied, taking the opportunity to continue practicing mimicry and slight-of-hand. She got a job with an investigative firm, going undercover to gather information. It was during a particularly successful job that she met someone from Starfleet Intelligence who encouraged her to join. It sounded like a great opportunity, so Scion applied, with his assistance. To her surprise, she was accepted. While in the Academy, she was impressed by a visiting captain who spoke to the cadets. He was both knowledgeable and charismatic. He inspired her to work harder and make sure she did what she loved and loved what she did. Captain Paul Griffon was a favorite of those who heard him speak or got to meet him. Her specialty is infiltration and information gathering as it makes the best use of her abilities and gives her opportunity to continue learning. When she came of legal age, she got a tattoo on her butt of a small blue butterfly on a tiny three leaf twig (a scion). Her career in Starfleet has not been quite what she expected. She's a hard worker, and is always willing to help others with their research and investigative work. This has led to some claiming they did all the work and receiving a promotion instead of her. She has been passed over several times because she is generally the one to go undercover or to get deeply involved in research, leaving the others to file the reports--and take the credit. She received a field promotion to Assistant Chief Intelligence Officer aboard the USS Cadiz, which she thought was her chance to finally show what she could do. However, after a year and a half in the position, she was still a lieutenant junior grade. That didn't change with her transfer to the USS Gemini and the position of Chief Intelligence Officer. She enjoyed her time on the Gemini, but like all assignments, this one came to an end and she was transferred to the USS Athena. |
