The Sim

The USS Athena NCC-2203 is a proto-type variant of the Prometheus class, oh so imaginatively dubbed, the Prometheus Alpha variant. Like the Prometheus class, the Prometheus Alpha, is a sleek, powerful starship and handles some of Starfleet’s most dangerous missions. Compared to other ship classes in the fleet, the Prometheus class and variant are rare due to their technical and Multi-Vector Assault Mode capability.

This is where the similarities end between the original design and the alpha variant. Many of the systems have been upgraded given general technical advancement and technologies encountered by the crew of the USS Voyager, including Borg tech, which have been implemented since the ship returned from the Delta Quadrant.

The destruction of the Hobus star and subsequent aggression allowed for further integration of cloaking technologies into Federation ships. Although Starfleet Command does not wish to be known for ‘boldly going’ while using a cloaking device, the push to have cloaking devices integrated into more tactically focused ships was only a logical conclusion.

In addition to cloaking, an experimental torpedo launcher has been installed to try and minimize space used by standard torpedo loads. The launcher uses a re-usable casing to first generate an energy core, compress it into a torpedo, and then fire. It was based on early plasma torpedo designs. A special unit was implemented to help prevent the torpedo from losing its cohesion and dissipating after a relatively short distance compared to other torpedoes. The re-usable casing is discarded after 25 shots. Thus, reducing space used for payload.

A quantum-slip stream drive has also been added, just in case the engineering department found themselves bored with nothing to do.

The hull of the original class was increased to 500 meters long. The width to 200 and the height of the ship to 100 meters. Not all of the space increased was used just on tactical demands. Some of the extra space has been used to expand crew comforts. Although the Prometheus class will never be family-friendly, extra legroom does indeed help morale.
