| Personal History | As a baby, Eskei was left at a Bajoran Orphanage that housed Cardassian war orphans. Her upbringing was difficult and inhumane. Many Bajorans were resentful towards the children, either they physically reminded the people of their occupiers or reminded them of the collaborators that gained privileges in exchange of pleasurable servitude. The orphans were rough already but were also targeted by the Bajorans. Many of the children would find Eskei with injuries caused by 'accidents'. At the age of ten, she began treating their injuries and illnesses. Eskei learned First Aid (how to stop bleeding, place boards and vines to splint broken bones, put a dislocated shoulder back into position) and spent time watching Bajoran farmers collect certain flowers and herbs to treat certain ailments (fevers, upset stomachs, swelling, and cramps) this is the extent of her medical experience before the Academy. She also learned how to mix flowers and plants to create unique spices and herbal combinations for cooking. As a teenager, a group of orphans would set up street vendors and cook meals for Federation crewmembers in exchange for ingredients or recipes. Commander Griffen spent the last year of the Dominion War serving on the USS Miranda, he participated in the final battles and the Battle of Cardassia. Following the war, his ship was used to help deliver aid to the Cardassian planet, which in turn provided him a lot of shore leave time on Bajor. He came across a street vendor cooking various Federation foods from different cultures. Those working in the shop were Cardassian hybrids living in rags and trying to survive now that they were on their own. One of the orphans was Eskei. She caught his attention because she collected wildflowers and plants, using them as spices that made most meals just as good as homemade. Griffen made certain to frequent the shop and at times would stay after they closed to talk to the orphans. The Bajorans continued to treat them poorly, but they acted as though it was deserved. Then on one trip to Cardassia Prime, he met a Cardassian doctor who suggested taking the remaining orphans to a place that would be more accepting of them. She felt they should be introduced into Cardassian society, but the Commander knew that would be too soon. He did, however, book several merchant ships to transport them to Earth to give them a fresh start. He had a few friends in the Academy and got some enrolled. When he found out Eskei was a cadet, he kept tabs on her over time. For several years, he would visit her for a couple of days, she began to see him as a father figure during that time. Since Medical takes longer than the other professions she didn't graduate until he was assigned to command the Athena. He found out she was at the top of her class and used connections to add her to his manifest. |
