After the destruction of the Hobus star, staying true to their ideals, the Federation came to the aid of their one time enemy. They tried to get the Klingons to help, but their ally would not.

The Federation helped the Romulans create the Romulan Republic. In addition, they defended planets of the Romulans that lacked resources from the Klingons, straining their relationships. There are some in the Federation that are open to letting the Klingons and Romulans battle it out and pick up the pieces and become the main super-power in the galaxy.
