295 words; about a 1 minute read

Eskei worked extremely long shifts preparing the Athena to leave space dock. Tonight was her first good night sleep as she fell into a deep rest.

The scent of fresh rain falling, the consistent pattern of drops pelting onto the broad Philodendron leaves making a slight drumming sound. Eskei noticed her small hands and feet cuddled into a ball beneath the sheltering fauna, shivering from the freezing conditions "When was this? Where was I?" came the questions in her subconscious mind. Followed by unidentified voices approaching speaking in Cardassian, the orphan felt an immediate urgency of danger and her instincts demanded her to remain hidden; (Voice 1) "Where did that child go?", (Voice 2) "It doesn't matter, she can't survive in these conditions and the others have been dealt with. We need to return to the ship or we'll catch the flesh rot as well" the two soldiers continued walking past her secluded shelter, finally relieving the urgency of danger.

After several moments accompanied only by the freezing rain, she slipped out of the brush onto a muddy path, splashing as rain drops dove into puddles. The young hybrid began walking down the path away from the direction of the soldiers, moments later freezing at the edge of a village, bodies covering the ground, several more hanging over fences or broken furniture.

With a shout Dr Eskei broke out of her resting state, looking around her sleeping area on the Athena. Her nightwear soaked with sweat, and her hands shaking, "Damn. Get a hold of yourself Eskei. It was only a dream". The Ensign rolled out of her bed, bundling the sheets and discarding them in a far corner before proceeding to the replicator "A glass of Grape Juice please, chilled" the beverage materialized in an instant.
