What Do You Really Think?

673 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: :\>root
Location: Starbase 312, Admiral Varil's Office
Timeline: MD 21, 1830 Hours

Rob had been waiting for ten minutes for his meeting with Admiral Varil. There were no chairs in the outer chambers except for the one her Yeoman used at the desk. Varil expected her appointments to be on time and therefore saw no need for creature comforts. If you didn’t rank above her and she was in a meeting that ran late, better hope you were wearing comfortable footwear.

Rob wondered if she had managed to get the stick that was stuck up her ass in Academy, out.

Her Yeoman got up and went to the office door, “The Admiral will see you now Captain.”

Rob nodded in thanks and entered the room. It was spartan and very neat.

‘Nope, the stick is still there’, Rob thought.

“Captain Haines reporting as ordered Admiral”, Rob said setting the two bags he had been carrying.

“I didn’t say at ease Captain.

He had been summoned to her office as soon as he stepped off his transport. The immediate meeting and the intense flexing of authority didn’t make Rob feel at ease all as he picked up his bags.

The Admiral looked him over and shook her head, “I expect a little more decorum from the officers who call my station port of duty.”

“Aye, Admiral”, Rob said. “I’m not scheduled to report in until tomorrow and wasn’t expecting a meeting.”

Rob noticed one of her antennae twitch, which meant his toe almost went over the line.

“As a Starfleet Captain you are expected to be ready to respond to events at any time”, Varil stated.

“Understood Admiral”, Rob replied.

“And whatever this attire you are wearing and that poor excuse for a beard may have been overlooked at the Academy, it will not br while sitting in the center seat of a ship under my division sector is that clear?”

“Crystal, Admiral”, Rob replied, not believing he was getting such a dress down having just arrived. At least she could have done was given him a day or two to screw up.

“I’ve never liked you Captain”, Varil continued. “Your laziness, your debauchery, and how you got out of trouble so easily. I can’t believe a thrice demoted racktar such as yourself could be assigned as the Captain to one of the most sophisticated and advanced star ships that has been created, is beyond me.”

‘Try making friends’, Rob thought, fighting hard to keep his urge to say it in check.

“I don’t know who in the heavens suggested to the President you were the best choice”, she ranted. “But if I meet them, I will slap them.”

Rob had to fight a smirk as he knew that even with the Admiral’s training, she wouldn’t last two rounds against Kelsey. He knew it, because he had trained his friend.

She stopped in front of him and looked up with a scowl. Her superior officer attempt might work on shorter people, but not him. Still, he played the cowed officer routine so as not to get in trouble.

“Here’s what’s going to happen Captain”, she said. “You are going to run the Athena like the rest of the ships in the fleet are run. You are going to follow missions as listed in the order’s packets and not ‘Kirk’ it. Mission reports are due 48 hours after mission completion. Understood?”

“Aye Admiral, understood”, Rob replied.

She then tucked a padd into one of the bags he was carrying, still not letting him stand at ease.

“The orders for your first mission”, she said. “Be prepared to leave in 72 hours.”

“Thank you Admiral”, Rob simply replied.

“And now Captain Haines, get the hell out of my office.”

Rob did a formal turn and leave. As he did, he thought, ‘That wasn’t too bad. The stick did loosen a little.’
