Round Two... Ding

598 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Things Past
Location: New Hope Colony
Timeline: prior to arrival at USS Athena

Eimi verified that the lid was tight on the crate. The crate contained items not only her guitar but things that were of little use to most people during this time and age. Yet to her, they symbolized a very most important part of her being a better person. A person who didn't automatically mouth off, pick a fight, or get into trouble. They were given a chance by an instructor so long ago who opened a door to a young person, who needed a change and a focus in their life that wasn't full of destruction.

It was not a foolproof idea but it helped Eimi on more than one occasion. She slid the little beetle in the front pocket of her bag, and in front of the PADD that held her transfer orders. Eimi then slipped the bag over her shoulders. The tattered old thing had been hand-repaired often and would need some repair soon as one of the corner latch straps was a bit loose.

She glanced around and noted that the new robot was still running as intended. The program still needed an adjustment or two but it was in its permanent position. Attached to the table and making her Chief's various testing much easier. Eimi would work on the program during her trip then send it back and let the Commander update it. In the meantime she had a transport to catch and Eimi started her hustle towards the landing pad.

Eimi slid onto the transport right before the door latch was nearly in its closed position and glanced around. A group of various types of people stood around. Some of the Federation, some civilians, some miners going elsewhere, and some of the crew of the transport ship. Who now started to move the physical shipment crates around and tie them down.

"This way, please." An apparent person part of the crew raised an arm and motioned them all towards the far part of the room. "We have a fifty-two-hour journey before we make it to the nearest Federation Star Base where you can then go your separate ways."

Eimi trailed behind the group with one of the other officers from the Colony. Someone from security, and not anyone she knew.

"Hola," She said with a small smile "means hello."

A raised eyebrow and a puckered frown was the response, expression-wise. It caused Eimi to hesitate for a second but she continued. This was part of her treatment by the Counselors. When in a new place, new situation. Talk.

"I'm Eimi Santiago, I'm headed to a new assignment. You?"

The frown disappeared but the raised brow stayed stuck in place. Inwardly Eimi thought good start Eimi, at least they don't look like they are still wondering why you spoke to them.

The words in response were extremely slow and drawn out. "I… am..mm… head..ed..ddd to the USS Mo…Ooooh…. Gaaaa…diiiii…shuuu"

Eimi nodded, and glanced at the rest of the group that was barely to be seen "We had better catch up." She motioned with her head at the nearly departed group. Then stepped a bit livelier. "We can continue to talk if you like. Play any games or any instruments?"

The person nodded and placed their hand on their chest the voice still carried on slow, monotone, and dry. "They call me Hurin Bokchoi. I play a game learned at the Academy. Dominos. Do Youuuu… playyyy?"

It was Eimi's turn to shake her head as she replied "No, but I am sure you can teach me."
